I chose ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ by Jules Verne for my Final Major Project and designed it for a theatre production. From my research I took traditional Victorian silhouettes and used them to play on stereotypical ideas of how the audience would read them. I also concentrated on the theme of travel. To put my own twist on them I used Victorian stamps to inspire the shaped edgings. The stamps also inspired the colour palette and print designs alongside artifacts from around the world.

The story has quite a gothic feel to it, and I wanted to get away from the dark colours and make it colourful. Therefore I designed this production as if it was set inside a Gustav Klimt painting, using his paintings for my main source of inspiration for colour and textiles. For the silhouettes I concentrated on couture fashion, in particular collections by John Galliano. | ![]() Fuchsia - GormenghastThis is the design for the costume I made in my second year. |
