Costume with Textiles BA (Hons)

Print

The print for my take on 'Around the World in 80 Days' was largely inspired by stamps and artifacts from around the world. The stamps had this old, worn quality to them that I wanted to echo in my print. Therefore I decided to break up my designs by drawing them using a range of mark making.  I did this in the style of embroidered stitches and in random places faded this mark making out, so the print would looked worn and aged. The stamps were also surprisingly colourful and I wanted these rich vibrant colours to come through into my costumes.

Princess Aouda Sari

I used Viscose Hazelwood Devore fabric from Whaleys for the Sari. It is a mixed fibre fabric so I hand painted it both with Remazol and Disperse dyes to dye all the fibres. To print a length I had to sort out and plan all of my screens so that it would print as a repeat.

The main motifs were inspired by a coverlet from India in the V&A. I used a mixture of opaque pigments, gold metallic and monoprints to print these designs. I created a repeated stamp design from the Indian stamps and this was printed in a Devore paste last and processed.

To add that finishing touch I hand painted small specks of gold foiling around the border and on the large gold motifs so that they would catch the light on stage.

Sari Border

The end piece border was inspired by the shapes within an old Indian Stamp. By printing a thick line in gold metallic all around the sari I was able to use this to stop it from fraying. I cut down the middle of this line and the gold metallic kept the fibres from fraying.

The Choli was made from a Polyester Dupion that I dyed with Disperse dye. The print is inspired by a stamp border and printed in gold metallic and hand painted with gold foils.

Phileas Fogg Frock Coat

Phileas Fogg Frock Coat

The print on the Frock coat was informed by a stamp border. I used suede foam to print this design and then lightly hand painted in some gold foils. These techniques created the worn old quality that is echoed in the stamps themselves.

Phileas Fogg's Waistcoat

The waistcoat is made from a satin silk that was then backed onto cotton. I hand painted the fabric using Remazol dyes. The print design is inspired by the decorative back of an old Victorian pocket watch found in the British Museum. I drew elements of the pattern and using Photoshop I created this print.

To give this print that aged quality I was after I layered different techniques. Dark blue pigment, gold metallic and then blue suede foam.

Fuchsia - Gormenghast

Fuchsia - Gormenghast

This is my second year costume for Fuchsia from the play Gormenghast. The print is inspired by Gustav Klimt. After hand painting the fabric, I exposed a variety of screens and screen printed the swirls in a mixture of gold metallic pigment and gold foil. The dots where printed in a suede form to add some texture.
